  74. AFC Brite : Our ins. covers members bringing their eqip. to 
  75.             meetings, and the use of the equip. at our meeting site
  76.

  83. MarkNIDA  : I have a computer policy attached to my homeowners to 
  84.             cover business use of computer.  Adds about
  85.  
  86. Houch     : what companies will carry these policies and what 
  87.             kind of policy do you have to ask for?

  89. MarkNIDA  : $300 a yr to the policy price, but covers everything, 
  90.             like if my monitor burns in, HD failure etc

  96. Charles270: MacValley in LA has experience with insurance and 
  97.             with renting space and general liability questions

  104.             safeware like they dont pay claims

  127.             it fell through!  Am thinking about trying it 
  128.             again so that all groups can have cheap liability 
  129.             insurance and a low cost homeowners insurance
  130.  
  131. AFC Brite : wasn't looking at keyboard (learned that from 
  132.             Fearless Leader)

  139.             (I took typing in high school and made us NOT look at 
  140.             it, but then I couldn't read anything I typed)

  142. McBill    : How about insurnace for groups that hold their 
  143.             meeting at public places?

  145. AFC Brite : We hold ours at a school, is that public?
  146.  
  147. Charles270: We went out and purchased Board and Officer 
  148.             insurance, General liability and Product liability
  149.  
  150. AFL DonR  : Yes Bill that was also in the works.  I have heard of 
  151.             prices ranging from a few bucks to $1000
  152.  
  153. McBill    : We either use a school or a City Hall conference room
  154.  
  155. AFL DonR  : What did it cost Charles?

  157. AFC Brite : does the ins. make a difference if you're non-profit?
  158.  
  159. AFL DonR  : no Linda

  161. AFL DonR  : if you loose a piece of equipment the value is the 
  162.             same

  164. AFL DonR  : regardless of whether you are non profiot

  168. Charles270: We purchased a blanket coverage policy and with the 
  169.             deductable and items chosen it was reasonable.
  170.  
  171. AFC Brite : what kind of coverage do you have (do you know?) we 
  172.             have assorted values

  174. AFC Brite : oops, lost him

  176. McBill    : Don, What if equipment is provide for meetings by an 
  177.             agency that is insured.  Should we also cover? 
  178.             that's "Provided"
  179.  
  180. AFL DonR  : yes, depends on how they are covered 
  181.             they may be covered for something THEY do but not 
  182.             necessarily what YOU do 
  183.             lots of fine lines in insurance policies
  184.  
  185. McBill    : Even if I'm acting as an employee?

  187. AFL DonR  : we will have a insurnace workshop at the  
  188.             confeernce next year  well the policy may state  
  189.             that only equipomen covered at the place of work  
  190.             is covered, you need to make sure equipement  
  191.             taken off premises is covered yes, insurance  
  192.             is tough - lots of loopholes for not paying
  193.  
  194. Charles270: DonR: Do to LA being LA MVUG we with and assorment of 
  195.             coverages such as Dir & Off Liab,general liab
  196.  
  197. Charles270: Product liability, Personalk propeerty, and in 
  198.             transit coverage

  200. AFL DonR  : I have a feeling that many of you that have coverage 
  201.             really do not know what is covered? 
  202.             Am I right?
  203.  
  204. AFA Shwkr : If you have proper personal and vehicle coverage, 
  205.             YOUR equipment should be safe.
  206.  
  207. Charles270: Each User Group needs to tailor a policy that fits 
  208.             its area and that it can afford.
  209.  
  210. AFL DonR  : true, but if you use your equip for business at home, 
  211.             you need business coverage, the home 
  212.             owners extension may not be enought o covere you 
  213.             I have six computers in my room!
  214.  
  215. JVanDinter: There is some question of software replacement and 
  216.             how do you prove that you purchased it and the pric
  217.  
  218. MarkNIDA  : Don.. there is a limit to coverage of equipment on a 
  219.             standard homeowners and with $15000 plus of
  220.  
  221. AFL DonR  : home insurance will not covere that
  222.  
  223. MarkNIDA  : equipment being used for business, a addendum policy 
  224.             was required
  225.  
  226. Charles270: That is correct.  I was reefering to items owned by 
  227.             the group and not by the individual
  228.  
  229. AFC Brite : you should look into a rider on your homeowner's 
  230.             policy for your stuff
  231.  
  232. AFL DonR  : I have more than $50,000 worth of stuff
  233.  
  234. JVanDinter: The more you have, the more you pay!
  235.  
  236. AFL DonR  : I need a business policy and I dont think a home 
  237.             owners would cover me
  238.  
  239. AFC Brite : definately get more ins. what if your house burnt 
  240.             down!

  242. AFA Shwkr : We insure equipment (business) some time after it's 
  243.             purchased. Highest deductible/lowest premium.
  244.  
  245. Dormammu  : has anyone put together an ideal policy that we could 
  246.             show a company and ask for a bid?
  247.  
  248. AFL DonR  : I know, i worry about it every day 
  249.             good idea, If I could get a good estimate of the 
  250.             average worth of folks equip it would help
  251.  
  252. AFL DonR  : to try to get a company interested
  253.  
  254. InSync JC : We meet at a school and if we don't have adequate 
  255.             insurance, we can not use the facility. 
  256.             Insuracne costs us about $1500/yr.,
  257.  
  258. AFL DonR  : True Jerry, some meeting place force you to have a 
  259.             rider - that's too much Jerry
  260.  
  261. Charles270: How depending on how the information is presented to 
  262.             the company will determain many things such as
  263.  
  264. InSync JC : There are no alternatives - we've checked.

  266. AFL DonR  : No more than $300 should be eno0ugh
  267.  
  268. AFA Shwkr : Drop the policy, Jerry.

  272. Charles270: accepetance and premium.  Each policy is reviewed by 
  273.             an underwriter and each policy is defferent

  296. AFL DonR  : forget it, you dont watch TV so you wont get it anyway 
  297.             HAs anyone put in a claim yet?

  301. AFL DonR  : I dont think there is a loit theft so the comopanies 
  302.             are making a fortune on us
  303.  
  304. MarkNIDA  : No.. but have had good past results with agency on my 
  305.             homeowners claims..

  309. AFA Shwkr : I don't believe in insurance. I don't like insurance.

  311. AFC Brite : certainly making $ on Jerry's group

  317. AFA Shwkr : Who here has had their house burn down? Who has paid 
  318.             Homeowner's every year?

  320. Charles270: remember it usually is not so much the reward of a 
  321.             claim as it is the cost of litigation
  322.  
  323. DayneW    : What kind of covereage do you have Jerry?

  325. AFA Shwkr : What litigation??? Who's litigating???

  327. InSync JC : We've never had a claim (thanks) but we have to 
  328.             supply the forms when we renew the contract.

  330. AFL DonR  : [I think Jerry lives in a high Arson area]

  332. AFC Brite : Fred, homeowners is required if you have a mortgage
  333.  
  334. AFA Shwkr : Jerry and his people are supposed to be looking out 
  335.             for their stuff.

  337. Dormammu  : hundreds of houses are on fire right now in Oakland, 
  338.             CA

  340. AFL DonR  : really? earthquake or arson

  344. InSync JC : It has been a long time, but the ordinary 2 billion $ 
  345.             of liability in case someone has a hang nail.

  350.             (you know what) out of me!

  352. InSync JC : Nothing fancy, just liability.

  354. MarkNIDA  : I was more concerned with theft here, over natural 
  355.             disasters, have had losses to theft already
  356.  
  357. MarkNIDA  : fortunately not the computer equipment

  359. AFL DonR  : hmm, where do you live Mark

  361. AFA Shwkr : Theft should be covered under home owners or auto.
  362.  
  363. AFC Brite : do you have equip at your meeting place belonging to 
  364.             your group,or bring it?

  366. DayneW    : Jerry, does the school dictate the amount you have to 
  367.             carry?

  369. InSync JC : If you have an alternatives, I'll give an address to 
  370.             send a proposal.

  372. Charles270: Have replacement cost content built into you policies

  378. InSync JC : I set it up 4 years ago and it still is the same. I  
  379.             don't have any details here. What is normal min..

  387. InSync JC : Agains lawsuit if anyone gets hurt during a meeting.

  395. Houser11  : Our group owns equipment but as far as I know has no 
  396.             insur. on it, what all would a group need to have

  398. AFC Brite : 600,000 gen'l aggragate limit, 600,000 
  399.             products,300,000 personal injury,adverts
  400.  
  401. AFA Shwkr : They going to sue a user group??? Get a brain.
  402.  
  403. InSync JC : But where do we meet? We are required to have it.

  407. AFA Shwkr : It wouldn't even go to court. 
  408.             Most judges won't even look at it!

  410. AFC Brite : may be not in the Shenandoah Fred, but in the real 
  411.             world it would

  413. AFL DonR  : well if the ug is incorporated and has little assets 
  414.             they will not get much
  415.  
  416. DayneW    : Wouldn't want to be the one that they would look at!

  418. InSync JC : If you were the judge I would not worry, but we live 
  419.             in the big city.

  421. AFA Shwkr : No way, Brite. It won't wash... not in the State of 
  422.             VA... not in most places. 
  423.              How do you serve papers on a user group?

  425. AFL DonR  : if the club is incorporated then the officers are not 
  426.             liable
  427.  
  428. AFC Brite : Don they usually go after the officers and any other 
  429.             individ. involved if the..
  430.  
  431. Charles270: even if the groups is incorp they can name and attach 
  432.             others on the board and volunteers
  433.  
  434. AFL DonR  : you serve themn to the president Fred 
  435.             if it is incorporated or to the pres or leader if it 
  436.             is not
  437.  
  438. AFA Shwkr : The officers are not even if it's not incorp. So sue 
  439.             me.
  440.  
  441. AFL DonR  : thats one of the reasons why you should incorporate 
  442.             cause it makes the group a legal entity and 
  443.             takes away the threat to the individual officers
  444.

  447. AFC Brite : what is really a pain is that we really have to worry 
  448.             about this junk

  455.             there ready and panting to jump on something like 
  456.             this.

  468.             anyway, not people

  471.             being sued, without being specigic, of course.

  473. InSync JC : We are required to be insured to meet in a public 
  474.             place. No insurance proof, no public meeting.

  477.             beings!

  484.             shark pool last week.

  489.             of years ago an Oregon UG mishandled
  490.             thousands of dollars from the kitty, I dont know what 
  491.             the oputcome was

  494.             tripping over a cable, etc.?

  567.             would be fine

  570.             meeting, etc.)?

  573.             with reasonable deductables
  574.
