GREETINGS AND WELCOME TO THE USER GROUP FORUM CONFERENCE
Our weekly chat with other user group
leaders about user group management.
Tonight's Conference:
Does your group need Insurance?
AFA Shwkr : ........ WELCOME TO THE USER GROUP FORUM ........
......... SUNDAY, October 20th, 1991 ...........
.............. Tonight's Conference: .............
....... Does your group need Insurance? .........
AFL DonR : WEll tonight is about insurance!
AFL DonR : How many of you have insureance on your computer
equipment, show of hands Y
AFC Brite : y
MarkNIDA : Y
KathyR : NO
McBill : Y
AFC BarryP: y
DayneW : n
AFC Brite : you do mean for the group, right?
Houch : no (personal insurance?)
Houser11 : No, Why?
AFL DonR : for YOUR equipment
AFL DonR : How many of you have insurance for your club meetings?
KathyR : Are you going to try to sell insurance, tonight?
MarkUser : Maybe
MarkNIDA : No for meetings
JVanDinter: y
AFC BarryP: Liability, equipment, etc.
AFL DonR : should I, do I look like an insurance man???? That's
the topic tongiht
AFC Brite : I have homeowner's ins, Applecare and our group has
ins. to cover equip
JVanDinter: n
McBill : n
MarkUser : The people we rent the meeting place from want us to
get it.
Houser11 : n
AFL DonR : ok, for you folks that do, tell us folks that don't
what shoudl we be looking for in terms of coverage
AFL DonR : price, company, etc. what should we look out for, what pitfalls to avoid - give us the benefit of your experience
AFC Brite : Our ins. covers members bringing their eqip. to
meetings, and the use of the equip. at our meeting site
AFL DonR : what do you pay linda
AFC Brite : $250 annually
AFL DonR : not bad, what company
MarkNIDA : I have a computer policy attached to my homeowners to
cover business use of computer. Adds about
Houch : what companies will carry these policies and what
kind of policy do you have to ask for?
MarkNIDA : $300 a yr to the policy price, but covers everything,
like if my monitor burns in, HD failure etc
AFC Brite : Great American Ins. Co. the Business Protector Program
Dormammu : ? has anyone invited Safeware to sit in this meeting?
Charles270: MacValley in LA has experience with insurance and
with renting space and general liability questions
AFL DonR : Mark, you mean you pay an additional 300 per month?
MarkNIDA : Sorry, thats per yr!
AFL DonR : No, we havent and I ahve heard bad things about
safeware like they dont pay claims
Dormammu : now i am worried.
AFL DonR : Linda, can you give us the address for your company
Charles are you with MV?
Dormammu : but i would like to hear from them.
AFL DonR : Sory Dormammu! :)
AFA Shwkr : Is there a reason to buy group insurance?
Charles270: yes
AFC Brite : Great AMerican Ins. Co. 580 Walnut St. Cincinnatie
Oh. 45202
AFL DonR : phone?
Charles270: 818-998-2605
AFL DonR : Last year I almost had a group policy for all UGS but
it fell through! Am thinking about trying it
again so that all groups can have cheap liability
insurance and a low cost homeowners insurance
AFC Brite : wasn't looking at keyboard (learned that from
Fearless Leader)
MarkUser : Sounds good Don.
AFC Brite : no phone, check with your independent ins. agent
AFL DonR : Charles what kind of experience have you had
(I took typing in high school and made us NOT look at
it, but then I couldn't read anything I typed)
McBill : How about insurnace for groups that hold their
meeting at public places?
AFC Brite : We hold ours at a school, is that public?
Charles270: We went out and purchased Board and Officer
insurance, General liability and Product liability
AFL DonR : Yes Bill that was also in the works. I have heard of
prices ranging from a few bucks to $1000
McBill : We either use a school or a City Hall conference room
AFL DonR : What did it cost Charles?
AFC Brite : does the ins. make a difference if you're non-profit?
AFL DonR : no Linda
AFL DonR : if you loose a piece of equipment the value is the
same
AFL DonR : regardless of whether you are non profiot
AFC Brite : danka
Charles270: We purchased a blanket coverage policy and with the
deductable and items chosen it was reasonable.
AFC Brite : what kind of coverage do you have (do you know?) we
have assorted values
AFC Brite : oops, lost him
McBill : Don, What if equipment is provide for meetings by an
agency that is insured. Should we also cover?
that's "Provided"
AFL DonR : yes, depends on how they are covered
they may be covered for something THEY do but not
necessarily what YOU do
lots of fine lines in insurance policies
McBill : Even if I'm acting as an employee?
AFL DonR : we will have a insurnace workshop at the
confeernce next year well the policy may state
that only equipomen covered at the place of work
is covered, you need to make sure equipement
taken off premises is covered yes, insurance
is tough - lots of loopholes for not paying
Charles270: DonR: Do to LA being LA MVUG we with and assorment of
coverages such as Dir & Off Liab, general liab
Charles270: Product liability, Personalk propeerty, and in
transit coverage
AFL DonR : I have a feeling that many of you that have coverage
really do not know what is covered?
Am I right?
AFA Shwkr : If you have proper personal and vehicle coverage,
YOUR equipment should be safe.
Charles270: Each User Group needs to tailor a policy that fits
its area and that it can afford.
AFL DonR : true, but if you use your equip for business at home,
you need business coverage, the home
owners extension may not be enought o covere you
I have six computers in my room!
JVanDinter: There is some question of software replacement and
how do you prove that you purchased it and the pric
MarkNIDA : Don.. there is a limit to coverage of equipment on a
standard homeowners and with $15000 plus of
AFL DonR : home insurance will not covere that
MarkNIDA : equipment being used for business, a addendum policy
was required
Charles270: That is correct. I was reefering to items owned by
the group and not by the individual
AFC Brite : you should look into a rider on your homeowner's
policy for your stuff
AFL DonR : I have more than $50,000 worth of stuff
JVanDinter: The more you have, the more you pay!
AFL DonR : I need a business policy and I dont think a home
owners would cover me
AFC Brite : definately get more ins. what if your house burnt
down!
AFA Shwkr : We insure equipment (business) some time after it's
purchased. Highest deductible/lowest premium.
Dormammu : has anyone put together an ideal policy that we could
show a company and ask for a bid?
AFL DonR : I know, i worry about it every day
good idea, If I could get a good estimate of the
average worth of folks equip it would help
AFL DonR : to try to get a company interested
InSync JC : We meet at a school and if we don't have adequate
insurance, we can not use the facility.
Insuracne costs us about $1500/yr.,
AFL DonR : True Jerry, some meeting place force you to have a
rider - that's too much Jerry
Charles270: How depending on how the information is presented to
the company will determain many things such as
InSync JC : There are no alternatives - we've checked.
AFL DonR : No more than $300 should be eno0ugh
AFA Shwkr : Drop the policy, Jerry.
AFC Brite : get a new one first tho
Charles270: accepetance and premium. Each policy is reviewed by
an underwriter and each policy is defferent
InSync JC : And meet in the street. NOT!
AFL DonR : yeah I agree with Fred, that is too much, not worth it
Dormammu : we would need a *range* of policies
AFL DonR : true
AFC Brite : Charles, are you an ins. agent?
AFL DonR : no he just plays one on TV
AFC Brite : beg pardon?
Charles270: no, but I handle the ins for the club
InSync JC : We've been romancedl, but when it comes to the bottom
line its all the same BS.
AFA Shwkr : Anyone ever run out an IRR on insurance?
AFL DonR : forget it, you dont watch TV so you wont get it anyway
HAs anyone put in a claim yet?
AFA Shwkr : That's a GOOD question!
AFL DonR : I dont think there is a loit theft so the comopanies
are making a fortune on us
MarkNIDA : No.. but have had good past results with agency on my
homeowners claims..
AFC Brite : no
AFA Shwkr : I don't believe in insurance. I don't like insurance.
AFC Brite : certainly making $ on Jerry's group
AFL DonR : I agree with Fred
AFL DonR : russian roulette with our money
AFA Shwkr : Who here has had their house burn down? Who has paid
Homeowner's every year?
Charles270: remember it usually is not so much the reward of a
claim as it is the cost of litigation
DayneW : What kind of covereage do you have Jerry?
AFA Shwkr : What litigation??? Who's litigating???
InSync JC : We've never had a claim (thanks) but we have to
supply the forms when we renew the contract.
AFL DonR : [I think Jerry lives in a high Arson area]
AFC Brite : Fred, homeowners is required if you have a mortgage
AFA Shwkr : Jerry and his people are supposed to be looking out
for their stuff.
Dormammu : hundreds of houses are on fire right now in Oakland,
CA
AFL DonR : really? earthquake or arson
AFC Brite : why?
InSync JC : It has been a long time, but the ordinary 2 billion $
of liability in case someone has a hang nail.
Dormammu : yes, very dry years, very hot day
AFA Shwkr : That's right, brite... but it still urks (erks?) the
(you know what) out of me!
InSync JC : Nothing fancy, just liability.
MarkNIDA : I was more concerned with theft here, over natural
disasters, have had losses to theft already
MarkNIDA : fortunately not the computer equipment
AFL DonR : hmm, where do you live Mark
AFA Shwkr : Theft should be covered under home owners or auto.
AFC Brite : do you have equip at your meeting place belonging to
your group,or bring it?
DayneW : Jerry, does the school dictate the amount you have to
carry?
InSync JC : If you have an alternatives, I'll give an address to
send a proposal.
Charles270: Have replacement cost content built into you policies
AFA Shwkr : Group owns no equipment.
AFC Brite : mine, neither, but soon, maybe
InSync JC : I set it up 4 years ago and it still is the same. I
don't have any details here. What is normal min..
InSync JC : liability?
AFC Brite : we have 600,000
AFA Shwkr : Liability for what?
InSync JC : Agains lawsuit if anyone gets hurt during a meeting.
AFA Shwkr : Property owner's liability.
Charles270: In LA it would not be enough.
AFA Shwkr : Otherwise... let them sue. Who they gonna sue???
Houser11 : Our group owns equipment but as far as I know has no
insur. on it, what all would a group need to have
AFC Brite : 600,000 gen'l aggragate limit, 600,000
products,300,000 personal injury,adverts
AFA Shwkr : They going to sue a user group??? Get a brain.
InSync JC : But where do we meet? We are required to have it.
AFC Brite : (advertising injury)
AFA Shwkr : It wouldn't even go to court.
Most judges won't even look at it!
AFC Brite : may be not in the Shenandoah Fred, but in the real
world it would
AFL DonR : well if the ug is incorporated and has little assets
they will not get much
DayneW : Wouldn't want to be the one that they would look at!
InSync JC : If you were the judge I would not worry, but we live
in the big city.
AFA Shwkr : No way, Brite. It won't wash... not in the State of
VA... not in most places.
How do you serve papers on a user group?
AFL DonR : if the club is incorporated then the officers are not
liable
AFC Brite : Don they usually go after the officers and any other
individ. involved if the..
Charles270: even if the groups is incorp they can name and attach
others on the board and volunteers
AFL DonR : you serve themn to the president Fred
if it is incorporated or to the pres or leader if it
is not
AFA Shwkr : The officers are not even if it's not incorp. So sue
me.
AFL DonR : thats one of the reasons why you should incorporate
cause it makes the group a legal entity and
takes away the threat to the individual officers
Charles270: Don is correct
AFC Brite : what is really a pain is that we really have to worry
about this junk
AFA Shwkr : You got that right, Linda!
JVanDinter: I agree!
AFL DonR : true enough Linda but there are many lawyers out
there ready and panting to jump on something like
this.
AFC Brite : shoot the lawyers (except Ed)
MarkNIDA : And to think, we got started in this stuff to help
people out! :(
AFL DonR : who is Ed?
Houser11 : Lawyers like money
AFC Brite : the Beagle Buddy in our user group, works with banks
anyway, not people
MacPAc : Just came in. But does anyone know of any user groups
being sued, without being specigic, of course.
InSync JC : We are required to be insured to meet in a public
place. No insurance proof, no public meeting.
AFL DonR : Lawyers are the missing link between apes and human
beings!
AFL DonR : yeah I know one
Charles270: It has almost happened in the LA area several times
InSync JC : There were three lawyers born at SeaWorld in the
shark pool last week.
AFC Brite : like for what, punching someone out?
AFL DonR : MacPAc, yeah why would that happen although a couple
of years ago an Oregon UG mishandled
thousands of dollars from the kitty, I dont know what
the oputcome was
MacPAc : Like for being injured on the premises...faling dowm,
tripping over a cable, etc.?
InSync JC : Yeah that kind of stuff.
AFA Shwkr : That's the liability of the property owner.
AFC Brite : it's the clumsiness of the tripper
Charles270: Not necessarily, read your rental contract
AFC Brite : don't have one
AFA Shwkr : No rental contract
AFL DonR : yeah but still if someone falls on your sidwalk they
can still sue you regardless
AFC Brite : don't have a sidewalk
AFA Shwkr : no sidewalk
Charles270: no contract then it could be argued either way and
cost $$$$$$
AFL DonR : a lawyer willget you in court cause they know anb
insuracne company would rather settle than fight
AFA Shwkr : Covered in homeowners
AFC Brite : ditto
MarkNIDA : Make then sign a waiver before stepping onto your
sidewalk. ;)
KathyR : Am I responsible for the drunks sitting on my
sidewalk?
AFL DonR : thats where the system stinks
AFA Shwkr : Nope. We stand no-contest in court.
AFL DonR : yes kathy if they get hurt
AFA Shwkr : Shrug shoulders, say sorry.
KathyR : Even if they are related to me? ;)
AFC Brite : of course, if you shoot them INSIDE it's ok
AFL DonR : if you do not have the cops take them away you are
then agreeing that they can sit there
MarkNIDA : LOL Kathy
AFA Shwkr : Have nothing. Judge gets nothing.
AFL DonR : only if you shoot them in the bathroom oir your
bedroom
AFC Brite : he could put a lien on you for future considerations
AFA Shwkr : They don't have debtors prisons any more.
AFL DonR : or he could lean on you
AFC Brite : so, what should the "ideal" policy cover?
AFL DonR : theft, fire or act of god that destroys your
equipoment (like lightening)
AFA Shwkr : Lightening takes a special rider.
AFL DonR : for personal use, a general liability for the group
would be fine
AFC Brite : where ever it is (in your home, in transport to
meeting, etc.)?
Charles270: Dir & Officer, general, product intransit coverage
with reasonable deductables
AFL DonR : Hey folks, speaking of topics, I need to start a new
list of topic for Jan-Dec for COS so I am
AFC Brite : we don't have any deductibles
AFL DonR : taking requests
AFC Brite : no more chiropractors
NHMUG : COS ?
AFL DonR : hey i learned a lot from the chiro
AFC Brite : conferences
AFL DonR : conferences NHMUG
AFL DonR : that's what this is
AFC Brite : be nice, Don
KathyR : I vote ZIP on the chiropracters too.
AFL DonR : I meant that sincerely, he did not know
AFL DonR : or she
AFA Shwkr : It made a good log!
KathyR : Unless we can have astologists and UFO spotters in
here too.
AFC Brite : then be tactful, Don
NHMUG : he!
NHMUG : he!
AFL DonR : Hey good one, UGOs and the MAc
AFL DonR : twins?
AFC Brite : hard to tell, your name doesn't give it away
Houser11 : The newst Mac's
NHMUG : no twins, just too anxious on the 'Return'
AFL DonR : LOL
AFA Shwkr : YEA! UGO Spotters! Kathy... what a GREAT idea!
AFL DonR : WEll I will make up a list and send it out this week
to everyone and you can vote like you did
AFC Brite : wasn't that a car?
KathyR : Thanks, Fred!
AFL DonR : last time. And remember you voted for this topic
too, so think it through :)
NHMUG : UGO spotters or Yugo spotters?
AFA Shwkr : (What's a "UGO Spotter"?)
KathyR : I said UFO!
AFC Brite : we are working on this topic Don!
AFC Brite : scroll up you said UGO
AFL DonR : A UGO spotter is better than a mego spotter
AFC Brite : que es Mego spotter?
KathyR : No, you scroll up, Linda, I said UFO and Don said UGO
AFL DonR : hell I cant spot anything tonight, I'm tired
KathyR : :)

AFL DonR : by ann
Houch : what was that topic again?
AFC Brite : actually it wasn't all that bad
MarkUser : Woops, I'll stay.
Houch : it's more like a quiz
AFA Shwkr : How good can "Insurance" be???
AFL DonR : I learnemthing new and that is always good
AFC Brite : you never need it till you need it Fred
Houch : don makes up a question (obscure) and we all guess

AFC Brite : so Fred, tell us a blond joke
Houch : dan quayle
KathyR : Don, I get the jokes, I just don't think they are

AFA Shwkr : This is the wrong place.
AFC Brite : and frequently just lust
AFL DonR : yeah blonde jokes for the graphics forum
KathyR : I think "Free Love" is a concept a male teenager made
up.
AFC Brite : Fred, can you IM me one?
AFL DonR : yeah but those were the good old days didnt have to
worry about medical records
Houch : ...and i missed it by that much
AFA Shwkr : Yea. You need a sense of humor.
AFC Brite : I have one
KathyR : Don, some people still don't need to worry.
AFL DonR : Linda, ever in a mustang?
AFC Brite : does a Shelby count?
AFL DonR : I guess so but I would worry no matter what
Houch : yeah some people stay home with their computers all
night ::sigh::
AFL DonR : good enough, shelby is in
AFC Brite : no
AFL DonR : Oh, oh well
AFA Shwkr : In a Shelby?
KathyR : what in a Shelby?
AFC Brite : yeah Shelby GT 500 KR
AFL DonR : they were quite small in the back and you had to be
real clever
AFA Shwkr : OOOOOOOOOO Now y'er talkin'!
AFC Brite : by Carroll Shelby--listen to Cosby's 200 MPH album
AFL DonR : and flexible :)
Houch : where there's a will....
AFC Brite : not nearly as flexible in a VW or a Honda
AFA Shwkr : On the hood! On the hood!
KathyR : A Shelby is a car?
AFL DonR : but I've loved Mustangs ever since
AFL DonR : a type of Mustang Kathy
AFL DonR : fast back
KathyR : oh, i get it.
AFL DonR : real hot
AFC Brite : yes Kathy, from the 60's very fast very fancy very
expensive
Houch : vw bus
AFA Shwkr : I had two Mustangs. '65 and '66.
AFL DonR : 389 horspower
AFC Brite : I had a bus, Joe
AFL DonR : I have a 67 in my garage right now
AFA Shwkr : 389? in a Mustang?
Houch : i'd like to have known you then, L.
AFL DonR : some day it will be restored
KathyR : I had a VW bug as a teenager. Does that count?
AFL DonR : Fred, the mustangs were real kickers
AFA Shwkr : Surly you mean 289?
AFC Brite : what did you do in it Kathy?
AFL DonR : nope 389
AFL DonR : they had 289 too
AFL DonR : 250, 289, 389
Houch : i had a beetle when i was 27. my dad's got it now.
KathyR : Linda, can you narrow that question down? ;)
AFL DonR : or straigh 200 six
AFC Brite : no Kathy, I have a dead car now
AFL DonR : I met a beatle once - john
AFC Brite : whoopie
AFA Shwkr : I know, don, I had two Mustangs. Ford (nor Shelby)
never made a 389. 289, 351, 390 and 427s. No 389s.
KathyR : Oh, I see, Linda. Of course!
AFL DonR : Fred, yes they did
AFA Shwkr : Show me one.
AFL DonR : there is one parked out in front of my house RIGHT NOW
AFA Shwkr : 389's were Dodges and Plymouths
AFL DonR : belongs to the kid across the street
KathyR : Fred, you wouldn't happen to be an afficionado?
KathyR : ;)
AFL DonR : I hear it every morning
AFA Shwkr : Nope. Sorry. 289.
AFL DonR : says 3 8 9 right on the front
AFC Brite : OK children, enuf arguing
AFL DonR : come on out right noiw and I will show you
Houch : yeah, really
KathyR : Don, maybe you need glasses.
AFA Shwkr : Could be a 350. Or a 301. Maybe even a 190.
AFL DonR : come on, get in the modem
AFL DonR : right now
AFC Brite : take a picture
AFA Shwkr : OK. Here I come.
Houch : digitize it
AFL DonR : hurry up, i dont have all night
KathyR : Those 8's can look like 3's when you get older.
AFL DonR : see !
AFL DonR : there
